There are many occasions when a patient presents with discomfort presumably from a tooth; however, the diagnosis may not be tooth related at all. Again thorough consultation and examination are always primary and delivering treatment should be secondary. It is often seen that a tooth and/or teeth are treated but the original discomfort and symptoms persist.
Systemic diseases and several medications taken can give rise to symptoms which mimic tooth pain. Muscle dysfunction and neuralgias can cause and/or mimic tooth pain. A careful assessment which includes an accurate medical/dental history, examination and radiographs will assist in determining an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
